Connecting Community, Economy, and Ecology

center-festival-small.jpgSustainable Fairfax is one of the first groups in Marin to pioneer sustainability, with a legacy of educating the town council, supporting the community, providing services to the town, and conducting educational events since 1999. Through our work, we’ve come to realize that sustainability is not just an end goal, but also an approach to decision making. Learn more about Sustainable Fairfax >>

Smart Meters and what you can do.

smart_meter.jpgTWO VIEWS ON THE POTENTIAL DANGERS AND POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF SMART METERS

*Sustainable Fairfax does not have the staff/volunteer time to fully investigate this issue, but we are open to providing information on both sides and encourage you to determine best action. Information provided here comes from trusted local advocates on both sides. We do believe in the precautionary principle and recommend a full vetting of the technology and privacy policies before installation.

SMART METERS MAY BE BENEFICIAL

If we consumers have better access to our electric and gas usage data (including

being able to see our usage on close to a real-time basis), it is likely that we will be able to better understand our

household and conserve. Read more here- smartmeter_aug2

SMART METERS MAY BE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH

PG&E’s installing its wireless so-called “smart meters” (replacing our existing electric and gas meters) at every single home, business, school, medical clinic, etc, in the Bay Area & elsewhere. Marin was scheduled to get them starting in July, but they’re actually already being installed in parts of Fairfax now, a full month early! Most likely they want to get them installed before people learn the truth about the meters.

So, it's all the more important that you read this and take personal action ASAP, & also spread the word as widely as possible. The meters transmit pulses of microwave energy roughly every minute, around the clock, and even repeat the signals from neighboring meters in what’s called a “mesh network”; and PG&E is also installing additional antennas outside on our light and power poles.  PG&E’s official line is that no customer is allowed to opt out of receiving its wireless meters.  This entire system is creating a looming public health disaster for our families and our communities.

Iron Springs Pub and Brewery
iron_springs.gif After much hard work Iron Springs has now become a Green Certified Business by the Marin County Community Development Agency. We now will continue to strive to operate the most Green friendly Brewpub that we possibly can. Next step-Sustainable Business Certification.

Iron Springs just completed another phase of our goal of reducing our footprint on the world by completing our new lighting retrofit. This energy conservation measure will save 13,345 kwh/yr, 3.210 kw, and reduce the emission of carbon dioxide {co2} into the atmosphere by 6,939 lbs/yr. We continue to seek out and explore new ways of running the most energy efficient, low impact business, that we possibly can.

What does this mean?
